ZYN vs VELO: Which One Should Be Your Daily?

The two lineups
ZYN is America's bestselling nicotine pouch. The ZYN we stock is the line sold in Europe: fifteen flavors in two formats, so there's a flavor and a strength for almost everyone. The Mini line comes in 3 mg and 6 mg, the Slim line runs 6 to 11 mg, and two cans go higher: Blackcurrant Frost at 13.5 mg and Menthol Ice at 16.5 mg. VELO is made by British American Tobacco. It has a smaller lineup and a slimmer can, the pouch is moist so it kicks in faster, and the strength is printed on the can as dots. Ignore the dots and go by the milligrams on the product page. The VELO we stock runs from 8 mg up to 17 mg, half a milligram above ZYN's strongest, so at the top it's basically a tie. The bottom is a different story, because nothing in our VELO lineup is lighter than 8 mg. Six of the eight cans come in 10 mg (all VELO 10 mg) and four come in 14 (VELO 14 mg).
Which is stronger, ZYN or VELO?
At the top, VELO wins by half a milligram, which hardly matters: VELO Freezing Peppermint goes up to 17 mg and ZYN Menthol Ice to 16.5 mg. The real difference is below that. ZYN comes in 3, 6, 9 and 11 mg before it jumps to 13.5 and 16.5. Our VELO comes in 8, 10, 14 and 17 mg. So ZYN has two strengths lighter than any VELO we carry, and VELO has three cans (Polar Mint, Freezing Peppermint, Purple Grape) that let you go up in strength without changing flavor. Flavors
ZYN has the wider range. Besides the safe picks, Cool Mint and Spearmint, it has Coffee, Citrus, Black Cherry, Apple Mint, Cool Watermelon and Red Fruits. Most of those don't have an American version, and people look for them specifically.
VELO makes fewer flavors, and they're colder. Polar Mint and Freezing Peppermint are the two best straight mint pouches under 20 mg that we sell, in my opinion. Berry Forest, Purple Grape, Tropical Ice and Wintery Watermelon are the fruit flavors, and all four finish cool. (Our VELO post covers all eight flavors.)
How the pouches feel
Both brands use all-white pouches, so neither is more discreet than the other. ZYN Minis are smaller and dry. You'll barely notice one, but it fades sooner. ZYN Slims and all VELOs are the longer shape and last longer. The VELO pouch is moist, so it starts faster and drips a little more than a dry mini. Brands don't print whether a pouch is dry or moist, so we wrote up dry vs moist separately.
The US store versions are different products
Both brands are also sold in US stores, but those are different products from the cans on this page. US ZYN is a dry mini at 3 and 6 mg with its own flavors, plus ZYN Ultra at 9 and 11 mg. US VELO is a separate line at lower strengths than ours. We don't carry either. So which one?
- You use 3 mg or 6 mg: ZYN. The VELO we carry doesn't come that light.
- You like mint and you're used to stronger pouches: VELO. Try Polar Mint first.
- You like switching flavors: ZYN. There's a lot more to choose from.
- ZYN 11 mg isn't doing it anymore: VELO at 14 mg, or Blackcurrant Frost at 13.5 mg if you'd rather stick with ZYN, before you move up to the really strong stuff.
- You want to move up in strength without changing flavor: VELO. Freezing Peppermint comes in 10, 14 and 17, which makes it the easiest can to step up with.
- You want a fruit pouch with real flavor: ZYN. Cool Watermelon, Black Cherry and Red Fruits beat VELO's four cold fruit flavors easily.
