Dry vs Moist Pouches: The Spec Nobody Prints

Two cans can have the same milligrams on the label and still feel completely different. One comes on gently, and the other kicks in within thirty seconds. The difference is moisture, which no brand prints on the can, and it's often why someone else's favorite can doesn't feel right to you.

What moisture actually changes

A drier pouch starts slowly, releases evenly for a long time and hardly drips. A moister pouch is ready to go from the start, so it's faster and you feel it more, but it peaks sooner and drips more if you keep moving it around (placing it right fixes most of that). Neither one is better. They suit different people, which is why "just try my can" so often doesn't work out.

Texture isn't on any label, so this comes from trying a lot of cans, not from lab data (our post on what's inside a pouch covers what is documented).

Picking a texture

If drip bothers you, go drier. If you want it fast, go moister and don't poke at it. It doesn't need the help. For long meetings or long drives, drier pouches stay steadier for the whole time you keep one in (our post on how long to keep a pouch in covers that). The fastest start comes from a moist pouch at a high strength, but check our ranking of the strongest pouches before you go that way.

One caveat

Freshness changes moisture more than the brand does. A can that spent August in a cupholder will feel dry no matter whose logo is on it (our summer storage post explains why), and an old can feels drier still (see our post on expiration).
