Upper Lip or Lower? Pouch Placement, Settled

Upper lip. Between the lip and the gum, a little off to one side, and then you leave it alone. That's the whole technique. It took me an embarrassing number of cans to learn the "leave it alone" part, so today we're doing placement properly.

Why the upper lip won

Nicotine pouches inherited the position from snus, and snus spent a hundred years in Sweden testing the alternatives so we don't have to. The upper gum line produces less saliva than the lower one. Less saliva means slower, steadier flavor release, less swallowing, and a pouch that stays exactly where you parked it. Tuck one in the lower lip instead and you'll feel the difference in minutes: the flavor dumps fast, you're swallowing constantly, and every word you say nudges the pouch somewhere new. The lower lip is where drip comes from. Stay upstairs.

Off-center is not a superstition

Dead center under your nose does two things badly. It sits in the most visible spot on your face, and it parks the pouch where your lip does the most moving. Slide it toward a canine instead. There's a natural pocket up there where a pouch settles in flat, disappears from view, and stops announcing itself every time you talk. With a mini — say a ZYN Cool Mint Mini at about 0.4 grams — off-center placement is functionally invisible. Slims show a touch more. We covered the size formats in Mini vs Slim if you're choosing between them.

The four mistakes that ruin good cans

  • Fidgeting. Poking the pouch with your tongue every thirty seconds squeezes it like a sponge. You get a faster burn, a shorter life, and more drip. Park it and forget it.
  • Chewing. It is not gum. One absent-minded bite releases everything at once, and a 30 mg Pablo released all at once is a life event.
  • Same spot, every single day. Your gum notices. Alternate sides — left can, right can — the way you'd rotate running shoes. Our gum irritation guide goes deeper on this one.
  • Placing it and immediately eating lunch. Food, pouch, and chewing are three things that should never attend the same meeting. Take it out, eat, start fresh.

How long it stays in

Twenty to forty minutes for most people, and we wrote a whole piece on the timing question. Placement changes the curve, though: a still, upper-lip pouch releases evenly across that window. A fidgeted one front-loads everything into the first ten minutes and then sits there as a damp souvenir.

The short version

  • Where: upper lip, off-center, flat against the gum.
  • Then: nothing. Leave it alone.
  • Rotate: sides, between pouches.
  • Never: chew, fidget, or park it downstairs unless you enjoy drip.

If you're still picking a first can to practice any of this with, start in the beginner collection — every can in the store is $9.99, so technique practice is cheap.
