Pouch Etiquette: The Rules Nobody Wrote Down

Pouches are the most discreet way to use nicotine there is, but people still find ways to be awkward about them in public. Nobody ever wrote down the rules for using them around other people, so I did.

Rule one: close the lid

Every can has a compartment in the lid for used pouches, so they don't have to end up on a napkin or a paper plate. Used pouches go in the lid, and the lid goes home with you. Get this one right and you've covered most of pouch etiquette.

Meetings, interviews, first dates

A mini placed correctly is invisible. That's what our placement guide is about, and it's a big part of the appeal of the mini format. There are two catches. First, you can't control exactly when a fresh, strong pouch kicks in, and watery eyes don't look good in an interview. Put it in ten minutes early or skip it. Second, dinner dates. Take the pouch out before the food arrives and put it in the lid without making a show of it. Keeping one in through a meal doesn't impress anyone, and you won't enjoy the food or the pouch as much. Sharing

Someone will eventually ask you for one. For a start, cans aren't communal. You don't want a stranger's fingers in your can, and at $9.99 a can, telling someone to buy their own isn't asking much. The bigger rule is that pouches are for adults who already use nicotine. That rules out the curious friend who's never used nicotine and anyone under 21, with no exceptions, no matter how relaxed the party is. Around people who don't use nicotine

Don't pitch it to them. Nobody at a barbecue wants to hear about your favorite mint. A pouch is your own business, and if you keep it that way, you'll avoid a lot of awkward conversations.
