Pouch Etiquette: The Rules Nobody Wrote Down

Pouches are the most discreet way to use nicotine ever invented, and people still find ways to be weird about it in public. After years of meetings, flights, weddings, and one memorable stint of jury duty, here are the rules. Nobody wrote them down, so I did.

Rule one: the lid is not decorative

Every can has a catch compartment in the lid. It exists because the alternative is a used pouch on a napkin, a paper plate, or — a real thing I have witnessed — the rim of someone else's cup. Used pouches go in the lid. The lid goes home with you. This single rule is 80% of pouch etiquette and 100% of why some households ban the category.

Meetings, interviews, first dates

A mini parked correctly is invisible — that's the entire pitch of proper placement and half the pitch of the mini format. Two caveats. First: a fresh, strong pouch does its arrival act on its own schedule, and watery eyes read very badly in an interview. Park it ten minutes early or skip it. Second: dinner dates. The pouch comes out before food arrives, discreetly, into the lid. Parking one through a meal impresses no one and wastes both experiences — the timing piece covers why.

The sharing question

Someone will eventually ask for one. Two rules. Cans aren't communal — a stranger's fingers in your can is a no from every angle, and at $9.99 "buy your own" is affordable boundary-setting. And the bigger one: pouches are for adults who already use nicotine. Not the curious friend who's never touched the stuff, not anyone under 21, no exceptions, no matter how chill the party is. If an adult nicotine user genuinely wants in, point them at the beginner guide instead of your can.

Around people who don't partake

No pitch. Nobody at the barbecue wants the TED talk about your favorite mint. The entire appeal of a pouch is that it's your business — keep it that way and you'll never have an awkward conversation about it in your life.

Travel

Flights are their own ruleset and we wrote it up: short version, park one before boarding and use the lid, because the seat-back pocket is not the lid.

The list

• Used pouches: in the lid. Always.
• Big moments: pouch in ten minutes early, or not at all.
• Meals: out before the food lands.
• Sharing: no. Adults-only category, and cans aren't communal anyway.
• Non-users: spare them the seminar.
