Deer Stand Cans: A Hunting-Season Field Guide to Nicotine Pouches

Judging by our emails, a lot of the people who order from us in October are buying for hunting season, so this is the hunting version of our tailgate guide. A deer stand is the opposite of a tailgate. It's cold and silent, you could be up there for four hours, and anything that smokes, glows, drips or rattles is a problem. This guide is for adults who already use pouches and already hunt, not a suggestion that anyone take up either one.

What a pouch is good at up there

You don't need a lighter or a spit bottle, there's no smoke, and there's no foil to crinkle. You put a pouch in before you climb and don't have to touch it for half an hour, which helps when you're trying not to move. Compared with the alternatives, it's also close to scent-free, with one exception covered below. And a can fits in a chest pocket, which a spit bottle never did.

What it is bad at

Cold hands. The lid is the weak point. A stiff can, thick gloves and a numb thumb are how pouches end up on the forest floor, and that's when our review of can lids comes in handy. Open the can in the truck, put a pouch in, and keep the can in an inside pocket where it stays warm and easy to reach.

Scent. Pouches don't smell like smoke, but menthol isn't scent-free either. You can smell a fresh peppermint pouch from a foot away. If you follow a strict scent routine, the fruit and coffee cans give off less scent than the mints, and White Fox Original smells like the woods you're sitting in.

The used pouch. It goes in the catch lid, not on the ground. The usual pouch etiquette applies in the woods too.

Strength for a long sit

A deer stand isn't the place to push your strength. When you're sitting still in the cold for hours, a can that felt fine at a tailgate can feel like too much. For your first sit, go one step below your usual strength and pick a slow can over a fast one. The slim formats and the drier White Fox pouches release more evenly than a 30 mg Pablo, which is made to hit fast. Our advice on how long to keep a pouch in doesn't change in the cold.

The five cans for the season

  • Before dawn: ZYN Coffee Slim, 11 mg. Roasted coffee and chocolate, with no cream. It's my pick for a 4 am start.
  • The long middle: White Fox Original, 12 mg. A dry pouch with pine and eucalyptus that releases slowly and doesn't smell out of place.
  • For sitting still: VELO Polar Mint 3-dot, 8 mg. A deep cool at a low strength. Skip it if you're strict about scent (see above).
  • Something that isn't mint: ZYN Cool Blueberry Slim, 11 mg. Mostly fruit with a faint cool, and about as low-scent as a pouch gets.
  • The walk out: ZYN Cool Mint Mini, 3 mg. It's light and short, the right size for the twenty minutes back to the truck.

Cold-weather can care

Cold on its own is fine. A can left in the truck overnight in October will get a little stiff, and it'll taste exactly the same once it warms up in your pocket. The problem is going back and forth between cold and heat. A frozen can on the dashboard with the heater blasting will dry out a fresh tin in a week, which is the winter version of the glovebox problem from our summer storage post. Keep the can you're using on you and the rest in a drawer at home. If a can gets rained on, just dry off the outside. The pouches inside won't be affected.

Quick answers

Do nicotine pouches smell?

A little. There's no smoke, but a fresh mint or menthol pouch has a noticeable scent up close. Fruit and coffee flavors have less scent, and White Fox Original smells like pine.

Can you use nicotine pouches in the cold?

Yes. Cold doesn't change how a pouch works, just how easily you can open the can with gloves on. Put one in before you climb and keep the can in an inside pocket.

What is the best nicotine pouch for a long sit?

A slow, even can one step below your usual strength. White Fox Original at 12 mg, VELO Polar Mint at 8 mg or a ZYN Slim at 9 or 11 mg all hold up well over a long stretch.

What do you do with a used pouch in the woods?

Put it in the catch lid on top of the can and carry it out. Never leave it on the ground.
