Pack Math: The Can Price Is Only the First Number

Two nicotine pouch cans can cost exactly the same amount and still represent very different quantities of product.
That's where pack math comes in.
And no, this isn't another article trying to turn nicotine into a spreadsheet competition.
It's actually the opposite.
Pack math is useful because nicotine pouch packaging makes quick comparisons surprisingly difficult.
Different brands can use different:
- pouch counts
- pouch weights
- formats
- nicotine strengths
- strength units
So if you're comparing products honestly, there are at least four numbers worth separating.
Number One: Price Per Can
This is the number everyone sees.
Say two cans both cost:
$9.99
Easy.
They're the same price.
Except you still don't know whether they contain the same number of pouches.
A 20-pouch can and a 15-pouch can are not the same deal simply because the sticker price matches.
Number Two: Price Per Pouch
This is the first calculation that actually tells you something.
The formula:
can price divided by pouch count = price per pouch
Example:
A hypothetical $9.99 can with 20 pouches:
$9.99 divided by 20 = about $0.50 per pouch
A hypothetical $9.99 can with 15 pouches:
$9.99 divided by 15 = about $0.67 per pouch
Same shelf price.
About a 17-cent difference every time you take a pouch out.
Over an entire can, that difference is obvious because one can simply contains five more pouches.

Number Three: Nicotine Per Pouch
Now we get to the number people usually focus on first.
Examples might include:
6 mg per pouch
12 mg per pouch
30 mg per pouch
Those figures are useful because they're expressed using the same unit.
But don't confuse mg per pouch with mg/g.
That mistake is exactly what caused the earlier Pablo comparison problem.
If one product says 30 mg per pouch, you can compare it directly against another product saying 6 mg per pouch.
If one says 30 mg/g, you can't.
You need the pouch weight first.
Number Four: mg/g
Mg/g means nicotine concentration by weight.
The formula for converting it is:
nicotine concentration x pouch weight = nicotine per pouch
So if a hypothetical pouch contains:
20 mg/g
and weighs:
0.7 g
then:
20 x 0.7 = 14 mg per pouch
That's why the pouch weight matters.
Two products can have exactly the same mg/g concentration but different nicotine-per-pouch figures simply because one pouch contains more material.
Bigger Pouch Doesn't Automatically Mean Stronger Pouch
This is another common assumption.
A Slim pouch is physically larger than a Mini.
But that doesn't automatically tell you the nicotine concentration.
The manufacturer can simply formulate the smaller pouch differently.
That's why format and strength should be treated as separate specifications.
Pouch size can matter for comfort, fit and how much material is present.
Strength tells you something different.
Total Nicotine in the Can
There's another calculation you can make:
nicotine per pouch x number of pouches
That gives you the total labeled nicotine contained across the pouches.
For example:
6 mg x 20 pouches = 120 mg contained across the can
Again, that does not mean a user absorbs 120 mg.
Nicotine contained in the pouch and nicotine absorbed by the body are different measurements.
But the calculation can still be useful when you're comparing the amount of product inside two cans.
The Total-Nicotine Number Is Not a Dose Recommendation
This deserves its own section because the arithmetic can easily be misunderstood.
Calculating total nicotine in a can is an inventory comparison.
It is not a suggestion to consume the entire can.
It is also not a measure of bloodstream nicotine exposure.
Absorption varies.
Pouch formulation varies.
Usage duration varies.
So pack math should make labels more transparent, not turn nicotine consumption into a target.
Moisture Is the Number You Usually Don't Get
Here's where pack math stops helping.
Two pouches can have the same nicotine content and still behave differently.
Why?
Because the actual pouch matters.
Dryness, moisture, pH and formulation influence nicotine release and the sensory experience.
That's why someone can look at two equal-strength products and find that they don't feel identical.
A spreadsheet cannot fully explain that.
Flavor Has Value Too
And this is where purely numerical rankings become silly.
If one can is technically cheaper per pouch but you dislike the flavor, the arithmetic hasn't discovered some hidden winner.
It has just discovered the cheaper pouch.
That's an important distinction.
Numbers are excellent at answering:
How much?
They're worse at answering:
Is it good?
The Five-Line Pack Math Checklist
Before comparing two cans, look for:
- Price per can
- Number of pouches
- Price per pouch
- Nicotine per pouch
- Whether the strength is actually listed as mg/pouch or mg/g
Then look beyond the math:
Format. Moisture. Flavor. Cooling.
That's the honest comparison.
Pack math isn't about finding the biggest number.
It's about making sure you're comparing the same thing.
