Peppermint, Spearmint, or Menthol? A Mint Field Guide

Apr 21, 2026 · Zack F

Walk into our mint collection and you'll find three dozen cans all claiming to be mint. They are not the same mint. Here's the taxonomy, so you stop rebuying the wrong one.

Peppermint: the sharp one

Think after-dinner mint, candy cane, toothpaste in the complimentary sense. Peppermint has bite and a real cooling edge. It's the default "crisp" mint experience.

The benchmarks: ZYN Cool Mint (the bestselling pouch in the country), VELO Crispy Peppermint at the everyday 10mg, and VELO Freezing Peppermint when you want the bite turned all the way up.

Spearmint: the sweet one

Wrigley's gum, mojito leaf. Spearmint is rounder, sweeter, and reads almost like a dessert next to peppermint. People who find Cool Mint "aggressive" are usually spearmint people who haven't been formally introduced.

The benchmarks: ZYN Spearmint (3mg and 6mg, the 3 is a lovely gentle pouch), Iceberg Sweet Mint if you want the sugared version of the idea, Iceberg Double Mint for spearmint with a peppermint chaperone.

Menthol: not actually a flavor

Here's the bit most people never get told: menthol is the cooling compound, not the taste. A heavy-menthol pouch isn't mintier. It's colder. The flavor can be almost anything underneath; the menthol just drops the perceived temperature in your lip.

The benchmarks: ZYN Menthol Ice and Icy Mint, VELO Polar Mint Max at 17mg, and the entire Pablo cold catalog. Ice Cold and X-Ice Cold are menthol exercises with a 24mg engine. Frosted Ice from the Exclusive line is straight menthol, no sweetness at all, which some people describe as "biting a glacier" and mean it as a five-star review.

And then there's White Fox

Eucalyptus, pine, peppermint. Herbal mint is its own genre and I've already written the love letter. Mentioning it here for completeness: if every mint above sounds either too sweet or too toothpaste, the forest is waiting.

Picking your mint in one move

  • Want crisp and classic → ZYN Cool Mint
  • Want soft and sweet → ZYN Spearmint
  • Want maximum cold → VELO Freezing Peppermint, or Pablo if your tolerance is genuinely built
  • Want strange and herbal → White Fox Original

Every one of them is $9.99 a can. The whole mint family lives here, filterable by strength, which is the variable that actually deserves your attention.
