The Tropical Advisory: It Is Either a Drizzle or a Hurricane

What you can actually buy today (October 2026 update)

We ranked eight cans in August, and stock has changed since then, so here's where things stand before the rankings. We've already compared brands on berry and citrus, and done separate posts on cherry and grape. Tropical is the last big flavor family left, so here are eight cans from three brands, ranked.

Tropical has no medium strengths

Here's the lineup we ranked. ZYN Tropical comes in 3 mg and 6 mg. VELO Tropical Ice is 10 mg. ZYN Guava Spice is 11 mg. After that, the next tropical can in the store is 30 mg, because every other tropical flavor we ranked is Pablo Exclusive, and Pablo Exclusive only comes at the top strength. That's five tropical flavors, all at 30 mg.

So there's nothing at all between 11 mg and 30 mg. Mint is the opposite: you can get almost any strength you want, starting with 3 mg minis. Berry covers the middle fine too, at 10, 11 and 13.5. If you want a mango pouch at 14 mg, I can't sell you one, and honestly neither can most stores, because most tropical pouches are Pablo and Pablo doesn't make medium strengths. It's the best example I've seen of why we wrote our post on medium strengths.

How we judged them

Tropical is the flavor family most likely to taste fake. Peppermint is basically one molecule, and everybody gets it right. Mango, passion fruit, guava and lychee are much harder to copy, and a lot of flavor labs give up and make them taste like candy. So the test is simple: does the can taste like fruit, or like a beach-scented air freshener? We keep a list of fruit pouches that actually taste like fruit, and this post covers the tropical ones.

Two notes before the rankings. "Ice" on the Pablo cans means there's a cooling agent in there with the fruit. It isn't a flavor, and we wrote a whole post on that. A warning about the 30 mg cans

Five of these eight cans are 30 mg, which is the strongest we sell. If you usually use a 6 mg ZYN, a Pablo Exclusive is going to feel like a mistake, and you'll be stuck with it for half an hour. These cans are for experienced users with a real tolerance who already know they want something that strong. Everyone else can skip to the short section at the end of this post.

1. ZYN Guava Spice, 11 mg: the winner (sold out, notify me)

ZYN Guava Spice is the best tropical can we've sold, by a wide margin. Guava is the one fruit here that tastes like itself: musky, a little floral and clearly not candy. The spice keeps the sweetness in check. It's also the strongest tropical we carry below the 30 mg cans. Pablo had five cans in this ranking and lost to one ZYN. It's sold out right now, but when it's back, it's the first one I'd order.

2. Pablo Exclusive Passion Fruit, 30 mg: the best of the 30s

Passion fruit is all about tartness, and Pablo Exclusive Passion Fruit goes all in on it. There's a real sour bite, and sour is hard to fake, so the whole can tastes closer to fruit than syrup. If you're already used to 30 mg and you want tropical, this is the Pablo to buy, and it's in stock.

3. Pablo Exclusive Mango Ice, 30 mg (sold out, notify me)

Mango flavoring always drifts toward candy, and it's the hardest fruit in the group to get right. Pablo Exclusive Mango Ice drifts that way too, but the cooling saves it. It cuts the sweetness enough that what's left tastes more like frozen mango than candy. Mango is the classic tropical flavor, and this one comes at a strength most people shouldn't touch. 4. VELO Tropical Ice, 10 mg: best value, and the one to order today

Every full-price can we sell is $9.99, so by value I mean how often you'd actually reach for the can. VELO Tropical Ice does what the Pablos do, fruit plus cooling, at an everyday strength. When we ranked these, it was the only can in the store that did. The flavor is a slightly generic pineapple and mango blend. It's decent rather than vivid, and I wish it were 20 percent more specific, but I buy it anyway. 5. Pablo Exclusive Banana Ice, 30 mg: better than expected (sold out, notify me)

My honest take on Pablo Exclusive Banana Ice is that it's good, and I'm a little annoyed about it. Banana flavoring never tastes like real banana. It tastes like banana candy, and no cooling agent can hide that. What the ice does instead is push the whole can toward a frozen banana milkshake, which turns out to be a pretty pleasant flavor for a 30 mg pouch. One pouch will tell you whether you're a banana person. I wasn't, and this can moved me a little toward yes. It's sold out right now, and its page has a notify-me form.

6. Pablo Exclusive Strawberry Lychee, 30 mg

To be fair, this one is only half tropical, since strawberry isn't a tropical fruit. The lychee half of Pablo Exclusive Strawberry Lychee does most of the work. It's floral and surprisingly close to real lychee. The strawberry half pulls it back toward candy. It's an interesting can, but I'm split on it, so it lands in the middle. In stock.

7. ZYN Tropical, 3 mg and 6 mg (sold out, notify me)

ZYN Tropical (sold out, notify me) is faint on purpose. It's a mini, the flavor is light, and it's a vague tropical that hints at pineapple and mango without really being either one. It's seventh on flavor, but if you use 3 mg it wins by default, because it's the only tropical made at that strength. Both strengths are sold out right now. 8. Pablo Exclusive Tropical Punch, 30 mg: skip it

Fruit punch is what a flavor lab makes when it can't decide on a fruit. Pablo Exclusive Tropical Punch tastes like generic red fruit punch with no fruit you can pick out, and it comes at 30 mg. A candy flavor at the maximum strength is the wrong combination for me, and this is the one can here I wouldn't buy again. That's only my opinion, though, and it's still in stock.
