The Cookout Can: A Fourth of July Field Guide

The Fourth is tomorrow, and you'll probably only have room in your pocket for one can, so it's worth picking the right one. A cookout means hours outside in the heat with a lot going on, and not every pouch holds up to that.

What survives a cookout

Citrus does best in the heat. Pablo Exclusive Lemonade is the best-tasting lemonade we sell, but it's also 30 mg, which is a lot for anyone who isn't already an experienced Pablo user. Most people should bring ZYN Citrus at 6 or 11 instead.

Watermelon is the obvious summer flavor, and here the obvious pick is the right one. ZYN Cool Watermelon is the easy afternoon can, and VELO Wintery Watermelon at 14 is the same idea with more behind it.

Sour flavors work well too. Iceberg Sour Berries cuts through grill smoke and sunscreen better than anything sweet does. The rest of the warm-weather picks are in our hot-weather rankings.

What doesn't

Dessert cans clash with the food. A bratwurst and a Strawberry Cheesecake pouch shouldn't happen in the same hour. Heavy menthol doesn't go with a meal either, so save the big mints for after the plates are cleared. The novelty flavors, like the colas and energy flavors in our post on drink flavors, are better for after the meal than during it.

Cookout logistics

Keep the can in your pocket, not on the picnic table. We covered what heat does to a can two days ago, and none of it is good. Used pouches go in the lid, since that's what the catch compartment is for, and nobody wants to find one on a paper plate. Eat first and save the pouch for after, because a pouch during dinner wastes both the pouch and the dinner.

At a big family gathering, keep the can on you instead of setting it down somewhere. Pouches are for adults 21 and over who already use nicotine, and nobody else.

The pick

I'm going with ZYN Citrus 6 for the long afternoon and Iceberg Sour Berries for the fireworks. Every can is $9.99, and the rest of the summer flavors are on our fruit pouches page. Happy Fourth.
