The Apple Face-Off: ZYN Apple Mint vs Iceberg Double Apple

Apple is one of the smallest fruit categories in our lineup. There are only three cans, and each one takes apple in a different direction: ZYN Apple Mint Mini, ZYN Apple Mint Slim and Iceberg Double Apple.

The two ZYNs aren't just one flavor in two pouch sizes. Going by our listings, the Mini is crisp green apple with a softer mint, while the Slim adds spearmint, vanilla and a hint of coconut. Iceberg Double Apple goes the opposite way: green and red apple, tart and then sweet, with no menthol.

ZYN Apple Mint Mini: Green Apple First

The Mini is the simplest take on apple: green apple, a soft mint and a smaller pouch. The green apple gives the flavor a clear tartness, so it doesn't turn into generic sweet fruit. The mint stays in the background and doesn't cover up the apple.

ZYN Apple Mint Slim: Same Name, More Going On

The Slim has green apple, spearmint, vanilla and even a hint of coconut, which is a much more complicated recipe. You're not really meant to pick out the vanilla and coconut. They just round off the sharp edges. So where the Mini is crisp apple followed by cool mint, the Slim has more going on underneath. If you only compare ZYN Mini and Slim by nicotine strength, you'd miss that.

Iceberg Double Apple: No Mint at All

Iceberg takes the other obvious route and leaves out the mint. Instead it combines green and red apple: the green brings the tartness and the red brings the sweetness. That arguably makes it the most apple-focused of the three.

Which Is the Most Apple-Forward?

Iceberg Double Apple, since there's no mint competing with it for the second half of the flavor. The whole idea is two kinds of apple. If you're only judging how much of the flavor is about apple, it's the clearest answer.

Which Is the Freshest?

Probably the ZYN Apple Mint Mini. Green apple with a soft mint gives it the simplest, crispest flavor of the three, and it's the smaller pouch too.

Which Is the Most Complex?

That's the ZYN Apple Mint Slim. Green apple and spearmint would have been enough on their own. Adding vanilla and coconut changes the flavor without turning it into a different kind of pouch, so it's a more ambitious can than the Mini.

The Strengths
